Biography of Pierre Gasly

Pierre Gasly is a French F1 driver currently racing for the Alpine team.

Gasly started his F1 career with the then Toro Rosso team before an ill-fated step up to the main Red Bull team ended in a demotion, which was played out in graphic detail on F1's hit Netflix documentary show 'Drive to Survive'.

Gasly has been impressive since stepping back down to AlphaTauri, claiming his maiden F1 race win in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Pierre was born in Rouen, France on February 7, 1996 and he is now 28 years of age.

The Frenchman stands at a height of 5ft 10ins tall (1.77m).

Pierre Gasly in F1

Pierre Gasly spent several years waiting to be the next F1 driver off the production line from the Red Bull junior programme, and a crazy couple of years put the Frenchman in the top team for 2019 alongside the brilliant Max Verstappen.

Having impressed in Toro Rosso's first year with Honda power units, Gasly was selected as the man to replace Daniel Ricciardo, ahead of fellow academy graduate and former junior series rival Carlos Sainz.

Gasly spent 2015 and 2016 in Formula 2, winning the title in the latter season with Prema Racing. Unable to spend another season at that level as champions cannot return to defend their crown, Gasly instead switched to Super Formula for 2017, where he was a title contender with Hiroaki Ishiura and Felix Rosenqvist.

Daniil Kvyat's struggles in F1 that year saw Red Bull lose patience towards the end of the year, with Gasly replacing the Russian in Malaysia to make his F1 debut.

Gasly missed the following race in the United States as he travelled back to Japan for the final round of the Super Formula season, but poor weather saw the round cancelled and Ishiura was crowned champion.

Gasly impressed across 2018, outperforming Brendon Hartley in several races and securing points finishes in five races.

The Frenchman's crowning moment came at the Bahrain Grand Prix as he drove to a superb fourth place, securing Honda's best result since returning to Formula 1 in 2015.

Strong showings in Monaco, Hungary and Belgium convinced Red bull of his talents and he was the man called upon when Ricciardo announced his shock decision to switch to Renault.

Gasly's time at Red Bull did not go smoothly whatsoever.

The Frenchman struggled to compete with teammate Verstappen and was often a lap down on the front-runners.

His mid-season departure back to Toro Rosso was seen as harsh yet would ultimately define Gasly's career.

A resurgence at the end of 2019 saw Gasly take his first podium in Brazil, whilst a rebrand to AlphaTauri brought impressive results.

In Italy in 2020, Gasly would make the most of red flags and a commanding drive for the second half of the race to take a maiden F1 victory and banish any demons from his previous experiences.

Gasly was arguably the standout performer in 2021, dragging AlphaTauri almost single-handedly to fifth in the standings.

The team had to eventually settle for sixth, but the performances were proof of Gasly's undoubted potential.

While Gasly achieved a respectable 9th place in the 2021 drivers' championship, his performance dipped in 2022, landing him in 14th.

Seeking a fresh start, Gasly joined Alpine for 2023 in an all-French driver pairing with Esteban Ocon. His season yielded 62 points, securing him a respectable 11th place in the overall standings.
