Max Verstappen was één van de weinige lichtpuntjes tijdens de Grand Prix van Rusland. De Nederlander startte vanaf de negentiende positie, maar werkte zich middels een fenomenale inhaalrace op tot de vijfde stek. Om dit te bewerkstelligen had hij slechts acht ronden nodig. Verstappen werd na afloop van de race dan ook uitgeroepen tot Driver of the Day. Zijn prestaties in Sochi hebben veel lof geoogst, zowel in binnen- als buitenland.
