About Chris Deeley

Chris Deeley is a motorsport journalist, writer and editor specialising in F1, covering the sport through news, race reports, analysis and off-the-wall features. Chris began his journalism career in football, joining 90min (then FTBpro) in 2013. He became an editor at 90min in 2016, gaining Premier League and FIFA accreditation, and covering the biggest games in the sport before becoming FanSided's Soccer Editorial Director in 2021. A long-time motorsport fan, Chris moved to GPFans in 2023 to begin writing about F1, and helped found the website's US edition (which later became Oval Insider), leading to him extensively covering NASCAR and other top level stock car racing across the Cup, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Truck Series. Chris' focus is now entirely back on F1.

Areas of expertise

Chris specialises in reporting on F1, with an encyclopaedic knowledge which takes in the sport's past, its present, and uses that to help predict the shape of its future. He also has a very good working knowledge of NASCAR and IndyCar, allowing him to contextualise F1 stories in the larger motorsport landscape and provide value to audiences regardless of their existing knowledge base. Alongside his motorsport knowledge, Chris also have a strong understanding of digital publishing and the digital media landscape, SEO, and audience habits. He uses that knowledge, along with search data and other analytical insights, to guide his coverage and provide value for his audience, remaining authoritative while keeping his content accessible.

Experience

Chris has worked in motorsport media for a number of years, largely focusing on F1 and NASCAR in that time. He has covered F1 throughout his time in motorsport, writing live qualifying and race reports, as well as reporting breaking news, conducting and writing up interviews, and pitching and writing analysis and features. His work involves reacting fast to developing stories, ensuring faultless accuracy while finding fresh packaging and angles. In NASCAR, Chris has significant experience covering the series between news, race weekends, and various driver availabilities, developing an understanding of the sport, its biggest characters and most interesting storylines. He also has experience of creating social media content to complement both F1 and NASCAR coverage, with a broad understanding of packaging stories different for audiences across different platforms.

Editorial Approach

Chris' approach to F1 journalism is inherently narrative and storyline focused. As a huge motorsport fan himself, he understands the stories and broad arcs which interest and engage F1 fans, especially those consuming digital written content. He enjoys finding the story within the story while keeping an eye on the headline facts, whether working on breaking news or a longer feature. He is particularly invested in telling stories which his audience may not have previously been aware of, engaging them in those new narratives while packaging them in a way which doesn't turn off relative newcomers. Chris is particularly focused on telling stories which engage the reader fully and are worth the time invested by the audience, while making sure that they find the right audience to begin with.
