Alfa Romeo must "deliver the best" driver line-up for 2022 opportunity
Alfa Romeo team principal Fred Vasseur has insisted the team has to "make the right choices" with its driver line-up ahead of F1's new era in 2022.
The Swiss-Italian outfit switched focus to the new aerodynamic regulations early on this term with the hope of taking steps up the grid next season.
Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi are both out of contract at the end of the current campaign with question marks over their futures in F1.
With Alfa Romeo staying with Sauber to push the team forward beyond this year, Vasseur believes the driver line-up must reflect the forward momentum generated by the work at the factory.
"I have to take it case by case and with Kimi, we will have a discussion soon about the future, what he wants to do. Then I have to choose the best for the team," Vasseur told GPFans Global.
"We know the commitment and investment of our partners, of our shareholders, we need to deliver the best.
"Also, because we are opening a new area for the regulations and the new car and we want to build up something strong.
"So we have a real opportunity with '22 because I think that we do another step forward with the engine, because we started very early and much earlier than everybody else on the development of the chassis, and that we have also the stability with our partners.
"Now it means we have a real opportunity with '22, with the cost cap, the fact that it's the first car developed under the cost cap, and for us it's an open field, let's say.
"I would say that all the lights are green, which means that It's a new challenge, for us on our journey, and we have to make the right choices."
