Schumacher reflects on debut F2 campaign

Mick Schumacher has lamented the lack of reliability in his car for the 2019 Formula 2 championship, as he believes it was good enough to deliver better results based on “pure performance”.

Schumacher became the darling of the motorsport world in 2018 when he won the F3 championship, leading to inevitable comparisons with his father, Michael. However, he has found things more difficult in F2, finishing 12th in the standings.

Each of the 12 rounds saw a feature race and a sprint race, and out of the 24 times he competed, he retired on five occasions. He thinks it was the lack of car reliability which cost the team and himself more points and the opportunity to move up the championship.

"I think it's been a very positive year in terms of pure performance," Schumacher told Motorsport.com.

"It's been a negative year in terms of reliability.

"I think we had a few races where the points and positions have been taken away from us, where else it could have been a very strong weekend and performance.

"Unfortunately the set-up of the F2 weekend is basically race one decides the place you will start for race two.

"Many of my problems were in race one, which meant the weekend was basically trashed away from there.

"It's very unfortunate because I think we could have done very good weekends here and there which would have given me, in the end result, a lot of points, and put me in a different position in the championship."

The young German has naturally been tipped to progress to F1 sooner rather than later, and around a year ago joined the Ferrari Driver Academy.
