Renault's best-of-2019 Canada result 'nothing special'

They are expecting even better!

Cyril Abiteboul says Renault's first double points finish of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix was not a result of the French team significantly upgrading their car, but simply a representation of what they should be achieving in 2019.

Renault came into the season with aims of pulling away from the midfield pack and hunting down the top three, in particular Red Bull.

However a string of reliability issues hampered their early efforts, with Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg running below full power after a double DNF in Bahrain.

The pair came home sixth and seventh respectively in Montreal, vaulting Renault from eighth to fifth in the constructors' standings.

With an aerodynamic upgrade reportedly in the works for this weekend's home race at the French Grand Prix, Abiteboul says now is the time to make performance gains.

"Frankly we did nothing special, apart from doing what we should have done at every single race since the season started," Abiteboul told Autosport of the Canada result.

"There is nothing new in the engine, we are just operating the engine in the way it should have been operated if we had not had the issue that we had.

"The target was to start reducing the gap to the top and that is starting to happen.

"And that is clearly a relief to know that we are capable of showing to the outside world what we know is happening."
