F1 Canadian Grand Prix starting grid with penalties applied

A dramatic qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix that was spiced up by rain has delivered a shaken-up grid for the race.

There was, however, no stopping reigning champion Max Verstappen who powered his way to pole position in his Red Bull with a lap more than six-tenths of a second quicker than his nearest rival.

That particular driver proved to be Alpine's Fernando Alonso, who starts on the front row for the first time in 10 years when he scored pole position in the 2012 German Grand Prix while driving for Ferrari.

The Scuderia face a contrasting race as Carlos Sainz lines up third while team-mate Charles Leclerc starts 19th following a power unit change, with only Yuki Tsunoda behind him as the AlphaTauri driver also required a new system.

Like Ferrari, Red Bull also has its own challenges as Sergio Perez lines up 13th after the Mexican crashed during the second qualifying session.

Barring any unforeseen incidents, Verstappen is poised to increase his advantage in the drivers' standings over Perez and Leclerc who start 21 and 34 points adrift respectively.

As for Mercedes, again contrasting fortunes as Lewis Hamilton starts fourth after his best qualifying performance of the season, while a gamble that backfired from George Russell means he starts eighth.

Finally, a remarkable display from Haas as Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher, equalling the team's best in its history dating back to the 2018 German Grand Prix, with the Dane and the German fifth and sixth respectively.
