Spanish GP green light for this season after new deal signed with F1
The Spanish Grand Prix has been given the green light this year as bosses at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya have signed a new deal with Formula 1
It means the May 7-9 race will be staged as planned, with the objective now to find a solution for a more long-term arrangement.
The venue will stage the 65th running of the event, and the 31st in succession at the Barcelona track.
Circuit president Ramon Tremosa, who is also the Catalan minister of business and knowledge, said: “The F1 grand prix in Catalonia is a great world-level event that generates a multiplying effect in terms of GDP growth and the creation of jobs and wealth that is 10 times higher than the contribution made by the Catalan government.
"We will continue working at the government in order to turn the racetrack in Montmeló into a permanent venue for competition because Formula 1 is not an expense, but an investment.
“Catalonia is a motor racing country, with a huge number of followers, international champions and extraordinary infrastructures. [With this agreement] we are securing the presence of Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the calendar of the main national and international motorsport competitions for another year."
In a statement, it has been made clear that 'the Catalan racetrack will continue working with Formula 1 on a new, long-term agreement during the next season, in order to ensure the continuity of the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya beyond 2021'.
