Alonso: Indy 500 the 'highest priority' for 2020
Fernando Alonso will now focus all his energy on the 2020 Indianapolis 500, the newly announced Renault Formula 1 driver continuing his pursuit of the triple-crown.
Unveiled as the replacement to Daniel Ricciardo at Renault on Wednesday, Alonso will now switch focus back to the Indy 500.
“This year it is the highest priority," said Alonso. "I only have that race, so it’s 100 per cent. I am committed to that.
“I would love to achieve that [the Triple Crown] one day. Obviously, it’s a very special race, and it’s going to be even more special this year, because the lack of preparation.
“Normally you go there to test and do a couple of simulator days. This year, there is nothing. I’m really having issues even to travel to the U.S., so it’s going to be tight."
With less preparation than ever for the Indy 500, Alonso described the outcome as being "a coin in the air".
The Spaniard added that he expects both Renault and himself to now remain largely apart until after the 500.
He said: “For the team, for Renault, with the season ongoing now, and restarting again next weekend, me with the Indy 500, I think until September, lets say that we will not disturb probably the serious job, but we will try to split the priorities, but having in mind what is the final target which is 2021.”
