Steiner: 'I can’t say where we stack up in the midfield'

Haas F1 Team Principal Guenther Steiner believes that this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix is an ‘unknown’ for the team, as the American team prepares for the 2020 Season opener.

The team have had varied results at Albert Park over the years. Sixth place for Romain Grosjean in the teams inaugural outing in 2016 was backed up in following years with strong pace but costly mistakes.

“Melbourne is always the unknown for me. We’ve had fantastic results there and we’ve been on our way to some strong results before we messed up.

“I always like to go to Melbourne, even with the mixed results. I always find it an interesting race; you never know what you’re getting out of it.”

The uncertainty over any season opener will be heightened this year with the performance of all teams in the Barcelona pre-season test.

For Steiner, the mystery of where Haas lie after the six-day test only adds to the excitement of the Melbourne opener.

“One thing is sure this year, in terms of what we can see after testing, is that the midfield is very tight.

“I can’t say where we stack up in the midfield, maybe somebody else can, but it’s very difficult to predict. We’ll just find out when we go qualifying in Melbourne.”

Haas will find out exactly where they stack up when qualifying begins this coming Saturday.
