Steiner says Haas are taking 'a different approach' to F1 in 2020
Haas looking to improve on a difficult 2019 season
Haas endured a difficult 2019 Formula One season with wind tunnel results failing to correlate with the on-track data and consistent tyre problems. Team principal, Guenther Steiner, says that the team have had to change certain things in order to return to a more competitive placing.
Pre-season testing is incredibly difficult to read into, especially if looking for comparative date between teams. Results from the 2019 sessions led people to believe that Ferrari were going to walk away with the title and that both Haas and Alfa Romeo were going to be far more competitive than they turned out to be.
Reflecting on the problems of last season, Steiner said that his Haas team have been forced to learn some tough lessons.
"A different approach, and I think we are better prepared for the checklist what we need, and we have as much parts here as possible, especially after last year with the tires, we learned a big lesson that when we went to Bahrain, we didn’t have the right information so we try to learn it on Fridays, and obviously you cannot do that because you haven’t got time, and you need to get prepared for the race," said Steiner.
"So we try to get inventory all the parts data that we have got, so we can use it when we need it. In next week’s testing and in the first races."
Specifically asked about the correlation between on-track data and the wind tunnel, Steiner added, "No still working on that, but the but the drivers are not unhappy with the car.
"They are never happy, but it seems to be much more predictable, so that wasn’t bad today. But it is too early to say. We were doing a lot of just data gathering."
Kevin Magnussen ended day one of pre-season testing with the second slowest time, but fuel loads and engine modes are a tightly kept secret.
