Vettel: F1 is a mess

Sebastian Vettel says Formula 1's regulations have become "a mess" amid recent controversies over decision-making surrounding in-race penalties.

Vettel had victory taken from him in Canada after he incurred a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage after exceeding track limits.

The German lost control of his car at Turn 4 of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, skirting across the grass run-off and into the path of Lewis Hamilton, who inherited the win as a result.

Farcically long waits for stewards' decisions have impacted the past two races, including in Austria last time out when Max Verstappen's victory was confirmed more than three hours after the chequered flag fell.

Vettel has said that the over-regulation of F1 has made him see the sport in a different light, compared to when he fell in love with F1 as a youngster, and he has once again called for big changes to the rule book, having previously joked it should be burnt as a solution.

"I think the problem is now we have so many rules trying to put in writing what you can't put in writing," he said.

"It's just a bit of a mess, I can't think of any other sport where case by case, things are exactly the same.

"Things are always a bit different. And in our sport it's difficult to put everything and every possible outcome in writing. We need to simplify and give freedom to race each other."

Ferrari were also the team to lose out at the Red Bull Ring, with Verstappen's late-race overtake on Charles Leclerc eventually going unpunished.
