Haas "will not be great" in 2021 with halt to development - Steiner

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner believes the team will "not be great" during the upcoming season after a sub-standard 2020 season.

Having already conceded to halting development work on the '21 car, Steiner has said the team will struggle to compete because of a poor starting base from their 2020 car - the team finishing second last in the constructors' standings with only Williams enduring a tougher year.

“We started to develop it [the car] months ago," he explained. "It’s not that the other people have developed a lot but it wasn’t a wide open development because we had to manage budget and resources.

“We did very well when we had to manage resources and budgets so I hope we can get back to them times, but next year it will be difficult for sure because the development is on a car which is not very competitive."

With such little development intended to be made on the 2021 challenger, Steiner expects to find out the tone for the season in winter testing. “We are not developing from a car which is very competitive," he added. "So the reality is we just find out and we go out there testing.

"I think we try to do our best but I don’t want to make any promises how well it will be because I don’t think it will be this great but, as always, you try to do your best and you hope that you can make some of what you lost before.”
