Alonso to continue in F1 for another three years

Fernando Alonso has set his sights on remaining in F1 for another "two or three more years" as he continues to enjoy his comeback.

The two-time champion returned to F1 at the start of last season following a two-year hiatus after becoming disillusioned with the sport and its direction.

The break served Alonso well as he has since performed at a very high level, proving age is no barrier to how he drives on track.

But with Alpine reserve Oscar Piastri champing at the bit for his break in F1, Alonso's seat with the team is the one under pressure given team-mate Esteban Ocon signed a new deal last year that ties him to the French marque through to the end of 2024.

Asked if he felt that pressure, the 40-year-old replied: "No. I think if I was 25 there would not be this talk. It’s an age thing, that people try to find a way for the young talents, but I think this is about performance

“Last year I think I did well, I finished slightly in front of Esteban. Let’s see this year how the battle goes.

“But this is about performance not about age. As I said at the beginning of the year, I still feel competitive, fast and I feel I am enjoying my time in Formula 1."

As to how long he could continue in the sport, Alonso added: “I will race, I guess, a couple more years, two or three more years.

"If it is with Alpine it will be good, if it is with another team it will be good as well. But I will find out and I will start these discussions probably in the summer. Let’s see.”
