Red Bull v AlphaTauri in wacky six-wheeled Austrian challenge

The folks over in the Red Bull family sure do know how to have fun, and they have done it again in setting Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda a very unique - and very Austrian - challenge.

In the build-up to the upcoming Austrian double-header at the Red Bull Ring, the Red Bull duo took on their AlphaTauri rivals in a race that started across the country's largest lake, Grundlsee, through traditional Styrian countryside and on to the circuit itself.

Along the way the quartet dressed in lederhosen for the first event on the lake in Plätte boats before taking the keys to six-wheel, all-terrain Pinzgauer trucks.

Milking cows, popping balloons and riding a see-saw were all thrown in for fun before arriving at a damp Red Bull Ring to conclude the race to the flag.

“Honestly I’d never seen anything like the Pinzgauer before - a six-wheel car," said Verstappen. "It was used in the army I think. I don’t know when but it was pretty cool to drive."

Perez added: “It was very competitive, very serious [laughing] and the best type of Red Bull preparation you can have for the race weekend.”

The journey began via a flight in a Cessna 208 Caravan seaplane from Red Bull's Hangar7 facility in Salzburg for the short 80-kilometre flight to Grundlsee - which Tsunoda did not appear to enjoy at one point.

After completing the challenge, the Japanese driver said: “It was a really interesting and exciting event and there was plenty of teamwork. It was fun.

"Driving the off-road with the Pinzgauer, we got stuck a lot on the hills and we had a tough time to get out from there, but it was fun.”

Gasly concluded: “We went around the Austrian countryside and discovered a lot of different parts of the country before we ended up at The Red Bull Ring. It was also good to be with all four drivers together.”
