F1 signs new three-year Japanese GP deal with Suzuka
New F1 contract will run to the end of 2024
F1 will continue with the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka through to 2024 following the signing of a new three-year contract with the race promoters.
Suzuka has staged the last 11 races in Japan, and 31 times overall since 1987, and has been the scene for 11 title deciders during that period.
F1's continued deal with promoters Mobilityland is being viewed as "part of the strategic and long-term commitment to grow the sport in Asia".
Although Honda leaves F1 as power unit supplier to Red Bull and AlphaTauri at the end of this season, the sport's profile in Japan remains high thanks to the arrival of Yuki Tsunoda with the latter team.
Proclaiming himself "truly delighted" with the new contract, CEO Stefano Domenicali added: "Japan holds a special place in the hearts and minds of F1 fans all over the world, and Suzuka has played host to many of the sport’s most legendary moments, with 11 drivers’ titles being decided there.
"The Japanese Grand Prix has always showcased gripping, edge-of-your-seat drama, and I am thrilled we can continue to bring the action and excitement that is Formula 1 to the passionate motorsport fans of Japan.
“This extension is part of our long-term commitment to growing the sport in Asia, and we are pleased to be able to continue our successful relationship with Mobilityland."
Karou Tanaka, president representative director of Mobilityland Corporation, claims the new deal has come about "as a result of repeated negotiations with Formula 1".
With Suzuka celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2022, Tanaka added: "We will take on new challenges for the future while also cherishing the history and traditions of the sport so that we may provide fans with surprises, joys, and emotional experiences.”
