The Aussie and Dutch pairing had a good relationship throughout most of their time together at Red Bull, with only brief moments of tension, such as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, when both drivers collided.
Speaking to The Age, the 22-year-old talked about Ricciardo's speed and his competitiveness, saying: “I know Daniel is very fast.
“Daniel was faster than Seb [Vettel] in the year they raced together [at Red Bull in 2014], and I've raced alongside him long enough to know that he's a very fast guy."
Last season, the Renault driver came in the top 10 in eight races but failed to secure any podiums.
However, Verstappen believes that even though his former partner struggled to make an appearance in the top three, he thinks Ricciardo would obviously be happier if he was fighting amongst the top drivers
He added: “I can imagine last year was not the easiest for him.
“It doesn't really matter if the sport would be in a better place, but Daniel would be in a better place if he was fighting at the front."
