Nürburgring Eifel Grand Prix to be broadcast free on YouTube
Formula 1 is to partner with YouTube to broadcast the Eifel Grand Prix live across social media in "select European territories".
Fans in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden and Denmark will be able to switch on to the video-sharing social media platform to watch all sessions live across the weekend.
As remains the case with F1TV, however, fans residing in countries that have existing pay-per-view contracts with the sport will be unable to take advantage of the broadcast.
Formula 1 claims the viewership of live events on YouTube has risen by 250 per cent in the past year and, coupled with the continued growth of its own account on the platform, it is an experimental move worth taking.
F1 head of digital media rights, Adam Crothers, said: “We are thrilled to be working with YouTube on such an exciting project.
"As we continue to diversify our media distribution strategy and expand our digital offering, it is imperative that we engage fans who consume mediums differently and YouTube offers us the platform to achieve that.
"Partnering with YouTube also ensures we continue our pursuit of engaging new audiences in new ways to grow the F1 fanbase whilst continuing to innovate our media offering for new and existing fans."
