Mick Schumacher drives in F1 for the first time

It was a poignant moment in Bahrain on Tuesday as Mick Schumacher, son of the legendary Michael, sat behind the wheel of an F1 car in testing for the first time in the red of Ferrari. The 20-year-old completed 12 laps and according to onlookers appeared 'comfortable' in his surroundings.

The 20-year-old, who competed in the F2 race at the circuit on Sunday, was the only rookie driver taking part, with the rest of the teams opting for their more conventional line-ups.

According to Sky Sports News' Craig Slater, Schumacher completed an installation lap plus a subsequent 12 laps early this morning, and then spent time in a debrief with engineers and Pirelli tyre experts.

Sebastian Vettel is expected to take over duties in the Ferrari on Wednesday while Schumacher will switch to the Alfa Romeo to gain more valuable experience.

Ferrari have high hopes for Schumacher, who has made a rapid ascent through the ranks of motorsport. After a lucrative karting experience he quickly moved up to Formula 3, winning the European title in his second season.

He joined the Ferrari academy in 2019 and has finished in the top eight in both his outings in Formula 2 so far.
