Masi could be made "the sacrificial lamb" - Brundle

Martin Brundle has suggested FIA race director Michael Masi could become "the sacrificial lamb" at the end of an inquiry into the events of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Motorsport's governing body is currently conducting a review into the closing laps of the season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit which resulted in Max Verstappen taking the win and his first title ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

The controversy and ill-feeling stoked by the decisions made by Masi continue to dominate F1's off-season, with the FIA to present a detailed analysis to the F1 Commission in February.

However, the FIA has confirmed final decisions will not be announced until a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Bahrain on March 18, just two days before the first race of the season at the Sakhir International Circuit.

Asked whether Masi could be the only figure who suffers from the inquiry in a Sky Sports F1 Show special, former F1 racer Brundle replied: "He might be the sacrificial lamb.

"What's really important here for the FIA and Formula 1 is this is not swept under the carpet, left for a few weeks and then gets overtaken by the new 2022 cars, the tests and what have you.

"We need to understand what happened and why it won't happen again, and we need to reassure the fans that what they're seeing is for real and genuine and that they're giving up their free time to watch something that is a genuine competition."
