Will this track provide Bahrain with its second F1 race this year?

Formula 1's managing director motorsports Ross Brawn has suggested Bahrain could host two grands prix on a revised calendar this year.

Brawn has speculated the second race may be held on what is known as the 'outer circuit' of the Bahrain International Circuit.

It was a decision that caught circuit bosses by surprise as F1 had not previously mentioned it, however, it has been declared as "doable".

So what does the 'outer circuit' look like?

Well, it is just 2.277 miles or 3.664km in length. In other words, it is just 327 metres shorter than the shortest track on the calendar in Monaco, and it has only 11 turns.

In contrast, the grand prix circuit at Bahrain is 3.352 miles (5.411km) in length and has 15 corners.

A race on the high-speed outer circuit would also comprise 83 laps. The grand prix circuit requires 57 laps.

If Bahrain is given the green light to stage a second race it at least would provide the drivers with a different challenge from one weekend to the other, unlike the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone which are holding back-to-back events but on the same circuit

It has captured the imagination of the online community, a number of whom have posted videos of a lap of the circuit.
