Todt: 'Manufacturers may have to review their programs'

Jean Todt has predicted that Formula 1 could lose the few manufacturer teams that currently race in the aftermath of the corona-crisis.

Todt says that the uncertain financial landscape of the post-corona world could lead manufacturers such as Mercedes and Renault to evaluate their F1 futures.

"I don't think that the priority now for a manufacturer is to secure continuity in motor racing," Tod told Auto magazine.

"I'm sure some teams, suppliers and manufacturers may have to review their programs. They might be constrained to stop.

"I hope team owners and sponsors will keep the motivation. We must encourage them to feel they still like it and need it. On that, we have a responsibility. That's why we should listen to everybody."

In the same boat as many other sports, Todt says that Formula 1 will need to accept that it not an essential part of society and that manufacturers and sponsors could look to invest elsewhere.

"We must be humble," continued Todt. "Even if we love motorsport, it is not essential for society. So we have to ensure that we make proper choices and wise decisions. In fact, what's needed is a complete rethink of how we go motor racing."
