Verstappen: We knew we had the speed against Hamilton

A jubilant and triumphant Max Verstappen praised the performance of his Red Bull team as he breezed past Lewis Hamilton to triumph in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

After a late safety car following Valtteri Bottas' retirement brought the pack together, Verstappen was sitting in second behind Lewis Hamilton after choosing to pit, while Hamilton remained out on the track.

The Dutchman took advantage of his superior tyres to take the world champion in a superb move to go back in front and remained there until the end of the race.

Speaking before the podium after the race, Verstappen was delighted with the team performance for the entire weekend, and felt that they alwyas had the pace to set it through.

He said: "Lewis [Hamilton] was very quick so I had to keep pushing, we had to be really on top of our pit stops

"Two times we had a really good move on him, and that brought us back into first, and from there onwards I could control the race with the tyres I had, it's a lot of fun out there and great to win the race.

"I was behind so I was pushing flat out in my outlap to try and be close to him and it was my only shot so because of that I was close into the DRS, We knew that had great top speed the full weekend already and so it was great to get past."
