F1 reveals 2020 schedule with record number of races

Formula 1 has confirmed a 22-race schedule for the 2020 season, subject to confirmation from the FIA.

New races in Hanoi and Zandvoort will arrive in the first five races of the season, with Vietnam slotting between Bahrain and China and Netherlands coming before Spain as the first European race of the year.

Azerbaijan has moved to a later slot in the calendar between Monaco and Canada.

The calendar has been swollen to a record 22 races after the new events were added and races in Britain, Spain and Mexico were saved, with Italy expected to follow suit at Monza next week.

F1 CEO Chase Carey said: "It's the year in which the series that is the pinnacle of motorsport celebrates its seventieth anniversary with, for the first time, a 22-race calendar.

"It is significant for our sport and confirms our long-term strategy.

"The season with a record 22 grands prix has received unanimous support from the FIA and all the teams and clearly demonstrates the confidence that exists in the future of our sport."

The German Grand Prix is the only race from the last two seasons not to return to the schedule in 2020. Hockenheim's organisers have previously suggested that Mick Schumacher's promotion to F1 might be required to see a race return to the country.
