Charles Leclerc took his first F1 victory since 2024 on Sunday at the British Grand Prix, which finished under the safety car in dramatic fashion.

The safety car was deployed on the 48th lap of the 52-lap race when Max Verstappen spun out at Stowe while running in third, getting beached in the gravel and requiring his car to be retrieved. The clean-up process took just long enough to prevent a one-lap shootout – despite race control briefly indicating that the safety car would come in with a lap remaining.

Even with Leclerc's brilliance, championship leader Kimi Antonelli had looked the overwhelming favourite for the win with just 15 laps to go, hunting the Monegasque down with fresher tyres when his car developed a serious mechanical issue.

That issue saw the young Italian drop down the field after a pair of pitstops to try and resolve the problem, leaving Leclerc and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton looking set to cruise home for a Ferrari 1-2.

Verstappen's crash changed that, bringing many of the contenders into the pits for cheap stops as they anticipated a restart which never came – except for George Russell, who snuck ahead of Hamilton into second place by about half a second on the Ferrari's pit exit, turning a disappointing day into his first ever British Grand Prix podium.

That slashes Antonelli's championship lead to 25 points to his team-mate Russell and to 32 to Hamilton - although the Ferrari man's day could get even worse, with an investigation hanging over him for a possible yellow flag infringement.

With the field bunched up for the safety car finish, even a five-second penalty would see him drop from third place out of the points entirely. That would give Oscar Piastri a single unlikely point, having had to fight through from the back of the field after a lengthy first lap pitstop for a badly broken front wing.

Some questions remain over the end of the race, with race control signalling that the safety car would be coming in with a lap to go to kick off a one-lap shootout, only to re-deploy to keep it out on track and neutralise the final lap. The reason for that decision has yet to be revealed.
