In 2021 the cars will be worse, the racing better, reckons Verstappen
The Dutchman is already projecting to next season
Max Verstappen is already looking forward to the radical regulation changes of 2021, which are designed to improve the racing in Formula 1 despite the loss of outright pace.
New regulations will see reduced top speeds and lap times in 2021, but Verstappen is not worried by this so long as the show improves.
The Dutchman said: "It's great to do lap records, but to be honest I prefer good racing.
"The [current] cars are amazing to drive, and they are super fast, and for sure we'll break some lap records.
"But when you're following a car it is impossible. There is such a big downforce loss, and of course, with the cars getting faster, it is getting worse and worse.
"So for next year, the cars will not be as enjoyable to drive, but I hope the racing will be better."
One gadget that will not be allowed in 2021 is the Mercedes' Dual-Axis Steering (DAS) system, an innovation that Verstappen was surprised by.
The Red Bull driver is unsure of the gains that could be made with the use of the system but said that, if it were to be adapted for his car, it is something he would need to learn to utilise.
"I'm not too bothered about it," he continued.
"It's also not my job. I drive the car, and I try to drive it as fast as I can with what I have.
"It's up to the team to see what's allowed, what's coming onto the car, and I just give my feedback with what's on the car."
