Sainz explains McLaren 2019 uptick
Best of the rest honours at Woking!
Carlos Sainz says McLaren's Spanish GP upgrade has made them particularly strong in high-speed corners, helping to explain the team's recent excellent form.
Either Sainz or Lando Norris have finished as 'best of the rest' in three of the last four races, with Renault's Daniel Ricciardo taking that honour in the other one – in Canada.
McLaren have cemented fourth place in the constructors' championship with their recent performances, leading their engine supplier Renault by 20 points.
"The biggest effect the package has had is on high-speed corners," said Sainz. "So in France and in Austria, our was car performing very well on high-speed.
"That's probably why in Monaco and Canada we didn't see any big benefits, or we were just not as good as we were in the last two races.
"Now, we have a very nice rear end in high-speed and that is allowing us to be really fast."
The British GP is next on the calendar, with Silverstone favouring those able to keep the speed up through the corners, but Sainz wants the MCL34 to be a true all-rounder.
"In Canada, we did a lot of experiments," he said. "In France, we did a lot of experiments. But in Austria, with the penalty it was not a very, easy clean weekend.
"So we are going to Silverstone and we will try to put a good Friday, good Saturday and good Sunday together.
"We are still working to make the car better on low-speed [corners].
"We were not that bad [in Austria] in low-speed but we have work to do if we want to get closer to the top guys, which is our main target."
