Vettel concedes Miami "a different interest" to "proper tracks"

Sebastian Vettel believes F1 bosses should have explored a return to “proper tracks” in the United States such as Road America instead of creating the new Miami street track.

F1 introduced Miami to the calendar this year for an event that Lewis Hamilton has described as 'F1’s Super Bowl' but Vettel feels the money to host the race could have been better spent.

Former champion Vettel said: “Racing in the cities is exciting because people are already there, you don’t need to excite the people because they are already close. But from a racing and driving thrill, I would love to go to proper tracks.

“I think Indianapolis is a bit of a half-half race track – if you are not racing on the oval you are not doing the real thing – but the money spent to build this could have easily brought the standard up in great places like Road America.”

Vettel - Miami circuit represents "different interest" to old tracks

Vettel did concede that F1’s decision to create the Miami International Autodrome could still be justified from a fan perspective because the event – which is the second race in the US – looks set to become a crowd favourite.

“From a driving point of view, I think [the old tracks] would be a lot more thrilling," added Vettel.

"I think the US has fantastic race circuits with incredible history [but] obviously creating a circuit [in Miami] is a very different interest.

“From a fan point of view, I think that is a little harder to judge because the last time I sat in the grandstand to watch a race was in 2001 [at Hockenheim], so a long time ago. Every fan is different, so it is more for the fans to decide.”
