Wolff vows to hold FIA "accountable" for actions

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has vowed to hold the FIA "accountable" for its actions as a "clarification exercise" was announced after the controversial season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The FIA released a statement ahead of last week's Prize-Giving Gala explaining the exercise would be carried out to ensure grey areas were cleaned up ahead of the 2022 season, citing a "misunderstanding" by teams, fans and drivers for the confusion and angst in the wake of Max Verstappen's title triumph over Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes decided not to appeal the stewards' decision to throw out the team's protests at Yas Marina despite still being dismayed at the procedures used by FIA race director Michael Masi, whom Wolff has indicated he won't seek conversation with over the winter.

Asked what he expected to come from the commission's review, Wolff commented: “[We] expect the commission to not only come up with words but actually follow it with actions and we will hold them accountable for the actions.

"We cannot continue in a sport that is meant to be sport followed by entertainment and not the other way around, that we are held ransom by ad hoc decisions in every field, be it technical or sporting.

“And therefore, there needs to be clear measure in place before the start of the season so every driver, every team and the fans understand what is on and what is not on.”
