Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been left in no doubt the halo "definitely saved" Lewis Hamilton's life after he and F1 title rival Max Verstappen dramatically collided at Monza.

Verstappen's Red Bull was fired into the air after Hamilton squeezed his rival onto the sausage kerbs through the Rettifilio chicane at Monza on lap 25.

The Red Bull landed on Hamilton's engine cover with a tyre rolling forward across the halo and then making contact with Hamilton's helmet, leaving the seven-time champion with "a sore neck".

Assessing the incident, Wolff said: “The halo definitely saved Lewis’ life today..

"It would have been a horrible accident that I don’t want to even think about if we didn’t have the halo.”

After flashpoints in Imola and notably the 51g crash of Verstappen at Silverstone after contact between the two drivers, Wolff feels the two must find a way forward.

“It’s fierce and it’s intense and they need to find a way of how to race each other," he explained. “There will be accidents if it is not clear and it is never clear cut actually.

"The Silverstone one it was [judged to be] predominantly. But they know what they are doing in the car and how they are racing each other and we should be watching with interest and hopefully not having eight accidents in the next eight races.

“That means we would lose [the title] by five points or so.”
