Hamilton “analysed” Ferrari move but “wasn’t meant to be”

Lewis Hamilton has revealed he “had to analyse the pros and cons” of joining Ferrari but insisted he was “never close” to leaving Mercedes.

It was recently reported the seven-time world champion, who has only raced for McLaren and Mercedes since his debut in 2007, had talked to Ferrari about his future.

But he strongly defended the discussions and any suggestion he may have considered leaving Mercedes. “Firstly, I was never close at all to ever leaving my team," insisted the 35-year-old.

"I think it’s only right that as drivers, same as anyone, when you’re looking at the next phase of committing to a period of time in your life, you have to analyse your options and make sure you’ve done your due diligence, so you have the pros and cons.

“Timings, it just wasn’t meant to be. I am not bothered by it. I am so grateful for this journey I have had with Mercedes.”

Hamilton has secured six of his world titles with Mercedes and won more races with a single team than any other driver.

The Briton never fails to mention the work his team does behind the scenes to give him the car he needs to take every win.

The Briton maintains he is happy to be a part of that family, rather than Ferrari.

“I think this is the only team in the history of the sport where you’re a long-life family member,” he said.

“If you look at the older greats that have been there for their whole life, they are a part of Mercedes, the Mercedes brand. You’re a part of the evolution, and they include you in the family forever.”
