Ferrari and the FIA reach a 'settlement' over 2019 engine irregularities
Have Ferrari admitted to some element of wrongdoing?
Ferrari and the FIA have reached a settlement after investigations into their 2019 power unit were concluded on Friday.
Releasing a short statement on the findings of their investigation, the FIA said, “The FIA announces that, after thorough technical investigations, it has concluded its analysis of the operation of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 power unit and reached a settlement with the team. The specifics of the agreement will remain between the parties.
“The FIA and Scuderia Ferrari have agreed to a number of technical commitments that will improve the monitoring of all Formula 1 power units for forthcoming championship seasons as well as assist the FIA in other regulatory duties in Formula 1 and in its research activities on carbon emissions and sustainable fuels.”
When Ferrari returned from the mid-season break, the team were unbeatable in a straight line. This extra performance resulted in victories for Charles Leclerc in both Belgium and Italy while Sebastian Vettel took the win in Singapore.
For the U.S. Grand Prix, protests had been launched about various aspects of the Ferrari power unit, but chiefly surrounding the fuel flow, rival teams believeing that Ferrari had found a way to cheat the sensors.
A new double sensor system has been fitted to all cars for 2020 as a result and the fact that this has been labelled as 'a settlement' does give the impression that the FIA may have found something untoward.
Ferrari did not show their ultimate straight line pace at pre-season testing in Barcelona and it is certain that all eyes will be on the two scarlet cars when the season begins in Australia on March 15.
