Hamillton: Lauda would take his cap off for sixth title win
Lewis Hamilton has thanked Niki Lauda for his influence in helping his career after winning his sixth F1 drivers’ championship at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Brit went into the race knowing that a finish eighth place or higher would see him secure the title, with him eventually finishing second behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
Lauda was a major influence on Hamilton’s career before passing away earlier this year, with the Mercedes man knowing he would have received a well-done with a signature removal of the cap from his mentor.
“I miss Niki so much. I know today he'll be taking his cap off. I wouldn't have been able to do this without Niki, he is here in spirit,” he said after the race.
Hamilton struggled to articulate how he was feeling when asked to sum up his emotions, but eventually said he was “somewhere far above” cloud nine.
“Right now it's hard to understand what I'm feeling now, to be honest. Naturally, just pure happiness. I feel more humble than ever,” he responded.
“I just told my parents as I came in. Looking at my dad's smile, it says it all. He supported me from day one, as did Linda, as did my mum.
“They worked so hard for me to be here today, so I really wanted them to be here together. United as a family.

“Cloud nine doesn't even get close to where I am. I'm somewhere far above that.
“Really grateful to everyone back at the factory, everyone who has supported me this year. It is such a privilege and an honour to work for this team.”
He believes that this season is the hardest he has had to deal with in his F1 career, both on and off the track.
“This has been the hardest year that I can remember,” he said.
“It has been so challenging. Working with the guys, the fitness side of things, the healthy side of things, the travelling we're doing. The ups and downs.
“The ups and downs outside of the sport have arguably been more challenging.”
