Ricciardo no regrets at Renault: 'Red Bull haven't done anything more'
Things haven't quite gone to plan in 2019.
Daniel Ricciardo says he has no regrets over swapping Red Bull for Renault, saying his former employers have not shown any improvements since his departure.
Ricciardo won two races in 2018, although they were his only podium finishes as wretched reliability – generally due to Renault's power units – let him down badly.
The Australian saw fit to jump ship to the Renault works team, who had hoped to try and push towards the top three teams, but have instead slipped behind McLaren in the standings.
Although Max Verstappen has enjoyed two race wins so far this year in Red Bull's first year in partnership with Honda, Ricciardo says his mental hurdles would not have dropped if he were still in the team.
"On my side, there's no regrets," he told Fairfax Media.
"I've tried to picture myself at Red Bull this year and look at the potential results I could have had, but I don't feel I would be feeling any different to what I felt last year.
"I don't feel like I would have progressed. Max has won a couple of races, but they haven't done anything more than they did when I was there.
"I would have maybe stood on the podium a few times, but I've done that before, and ultimately it's not getting everything that I want [out of F1]. Knowing what Red Bull should be capable of, I don't feel it would be fulfilling for me.
"I look back at last year and yes, I was much further up in the championship, but I was a much more frustrated driver.
"Personally, I've got a lot more out of myself this year. I've learned how to drive differently, especially at the start of the year when I wasn't that comfortable with the car. I'm better for it and have done well to come out of that."
