Mercedes will bring upgrade to Suzuka

Toto Wolff says Mercedes will bring an upgrade to the Japanese Grand Prix, having skimped on updating the W10 over recent races.

A new front wing and floor design introduced in Singapore has helped Ferrari build huge momentum since the summer break, although that was stemmed somewhat by Mercedes winning fortuitously in Russia last time out.

Still, Charles Leclerc heads to Suzuka on a run of four pole positions in a row as Ferrari look to build momentum towards 2020.

Mercedes also have an eye on next season, with the update to come in Japan with the W11 firmly in mind.

"We haven't brought upgrades since a long time onto the car, and we probably haven't managed things as optimum as you can manage," Wolff said.

"But also we've been a bit unlucky also with our calls, and in the last few races we could have won some of these races, and we didn't. And that bad luck turned into good luck [in Sochi]."

On the lack of recent upgrades, Wolff added: "That's the way it was planned. You've got to manage your resource in the right way, also looking into next year. That is something which we consider very carefully.

"There will be a little thing in Suzuka, that we are just interested to explore. But not the big steps that we had when we pushed very hard until the summer.

"As the regulations stay the same it's all part of the same thinking."
