Antonio Giovinazzi believes he is learning a lot from having veteran driver Kimi Raikkonen as a team-mate, but has, unsurpsingly, said that the Finn isn’t always proactive in his role as a mentor.
Up until the Austrian Grand Prix, Giovinazzi was the only driver on the grid yet to score a point by finishing in he top 10 - outwith the uncompetitive Williams duo of George Russell and Robert Kubica. However, he stopped that run at the Red Bull ring as both he and Raikkonen scored points for the first time this season.
Raikkonen may not be hands-on when providing advice to his young team-mate, but Giovinazzi is happy with the dynamic they have, and says the two-time world champion always makes himself available to answer questions.
“Of course he’s not [one] who comes to you and tries to help you,” the Italian said.
“But I have the data from him, I have the video from him and if I need to ask him something he always answers me. So the relationship is really good with him and for this, we need to keep working like that.”
Giovinazzi may have had a tough time this season - his first full-time campaign - but was always confident that he could improve.
"My target was to improve race-by-race,” he added.
“I knew it was not easy because I had two years without racing so I’m really happy with the progress I’m doing.”
