British car manufacturer Aston Martin has issued a statement via their CEO, Andy Palmer, that they are interested in entering Formula 1 in a more detailed capacity, once the proposed engine changes take place, with the associated costs falling to an acceptable level.

Aston Martin is already involved with Red Bull as a sponsor but is open to becoming a more active participant in the sport, once the expenditure required to build and maintain a new engine can be justified, under Liberty's changes from 2021.

Palmer feels that this change would be more palatable if presented to the board, but speaking the BBC, he added that it would their call.

He said: "It moves from probably I wouldn't propose it to the board, to probably I would. It moves into the realms of possibility and I need to take it to the board, and it is an arrogant CEO that contemplates what a board decision will be.

"Obviously I am taking my board on a journey. We discuss it every quarter and I am warming them up to the possibility."

Palmer added that while Aston Martin and indeed Red Bull have a deep passion for the sport, there are some new regulations that have been proposed under Liberty which he is unsure of, and which need to be addressed if Formula 1 is to continue to prosper into the future.

He continued: "The sport is certainly not about the driver in the way it used to be," he added. "That would be my major point.

"You can have the argument you don't have the engine sound you used to have, the unreliability of some of the engines, the grid penalties, which are really hard to understand.

"How do you get demoted 35 places on the grid which only has 20 cars on it? So there are some absurdities.

"Obviously there is a commercial reason for me doing it and a commercial reason for Red Bull doing it. But essentially our intentions align and it's fair to say we love the sport."
