F1 watching "very fluid" Russia-Ukraine tension

F1 has confirmed it is monitoring the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine "very closely".

The Russian Grand Prix is set to take place on September 25 but with the situation escalating, F1 has revealed it is keeping a close eye on the developments.

On Thursday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine's Donbas region.

"Formula 1 is closely watching the very fluid developments like many others and at this time has no further comment on the race scheduled for September," said F1 via a statement.

"We will continue to monitor the situation very closely."

The comment echoes that of UEFA after the European football governing body confirmed it was "monitoring the situation" with regard to the Champions League final with Saint Petersburg due to host the showpiece event.

Speaking after the first day of pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Russian driver Nikita Mazepin stated his belief that: "The race is going ahead and you will surely see me there."
