Latifi - Death threats now "behind me" after Abu Dhabi furore

Nicholas Latifi

Nicholas Latifi has insisted the events of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix are "long in the past for me now" after receiving death threats for his part in the championship finale.

The chaos and controversy of the late safety car period at Yas Marina in December was triggered by Williams driver Latifi's crash at turn 14.

After Hamilton lost out on a record-breaking eighth F1 title and Verstappen won his first, Latifi was subjected to a torrent of vile abuse on social media, with the Canadian revealing he had received threats against his life.

Latifi has now declared himself confident the events of December are over, with his full focus on the coming season.

"I already feel it is behind me," said Latifi, speaking to Sky Sports. "It was a tricky few days with everything going on afterwards but I mean, it's part of the sport.

"It was kind of what I was expecting to happen as I mentioned in the post but I'm past it now and for sure, I guess once the season picks up and gives something more important for people to talk about and focus on [it will be forgotten].

"But it's long in the past for me now."

Williams is the only team yet to announce its 2022 launch plans. Red Bull, McLaren and Aston Martin are all set to lift the covers this week after Haas kickstarted things on Friday with the VF-22.
