Lewis Hamilton has conceded Red Bull "was far superior" after finishing second to a crushingly dominant display from Max Verstappen at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Hamilton finished over 16 seconds adrift at the end of the 71-lap race and now faces a 19-point deficit to Verstappen with four races remaining,

After starting second behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton's chances of victory disappeared on the run to turn one as the Dutchman used the powerful tow to pass both Mercedes drivers around the outside.

"Their car was far superior this weekend and there was nothing really we could do about it," said Hamilton.

"I gave it absolutely everything and even a great fight with Sergio [Perez] at the end, but I'm really grateful, like I said, to at least get second."

For most of the race, Hamilton was focused more on Perez than his championship rival, with just over a second separating the pair at the chequered flag.

"The pressure, I've had that many times before so it was easy to hold on but it just shows how fast their car is when Sergio is that close behind me and able to follow that closely," added Hamilton.

"He did a great job so he was applying that pressure and just kept going but I really enjoyed the race still."
