Williams hint at future Schumacher interest

Williams team principal Jost Capito has claimed Mick Schumacher is "a driver to keep an eye on" whilst hinting at future interest in signing the German.

Schumacher has received a growing amount of praise during his rookie season after having the measure over fellow rookie Nikita Mazepin at Haas.

After 16 races, the German leads his team-mate 13-3 in the head to head race statistics.

Although yet to score a point, something it took former F2 champion George Russell over two years to achieve, Capito revealed Schumacher's performances have been enough to catch his eye.

"I have to say Mick is doing an excellent job,” Capito told German RTL. “It's only his first year in Formula One, but how he's handled things, how he's handled the team and how he's got them behind him is absolutely brilliant."

For 2022 Williams will field Nicholas Latifi for a third year with Alex Albon replacing Mercedes-bound Russell.

Ahead of the Russian Grand Prix, Haas announced it would retain both Schumacher and Mazepin for a second campaign.

"He's [Schumacher] a driver to keep an eye on," added Capito. "He's a nice guy and really deserves to be in a car he can win with.

“I'm confident that will happen. If that were a Williams, that would be even better.”
