Biography of Nikita Mazepin

Nikita Mazepin is an F1 driver who is not currently in the sport after having his Haas contract terminated following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

Mazepin, born on March 2, 1999 and now 23 years old, had driven for the team in 2021.

Nikita Mazepin in F1

Mazepin was announced as a driver with Haas for the 2021 Formula 1 season on December 1 2020 but the Russian was turned on by fans after only a few days after posting a video on social media of himself groping a female passenger in a car.

Despite describing the incident as "abhorrent", Haas opted to retain the driver in a partnership with fellow rookie Mick Schumacher for the year ahead.

In his early outings, Mazepin has struggled to get to grips with his car. His debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix lasted all of two corners - the Russian spinning up his cold rear tyres in traffic and colliding with the unforgiving barriers.

Although his pace had been comparable to Schumacher's in Bahrain, this would change in the following races with the German able to extract considerably more performance from his VF21.

A chassis change seemed to provide the Russian with a confidence boost, although still not enough to restore parity with Schumacher.

Nikita Mazepin's junior career

Mazepin raced in numerous karting championships between 2011-14 but never set the world alight with his pace although, in his final year before stepping into cars, he was able to finish second in the CIK-FIA World Championship.

A similar pattern has also followed the Russian's progression through the junior open-wheel ranks.

In his first three years, Mazepin recorded just one race win, this coming in one of three races entered in the BRDC British Formula 3 championship.

It was in 2018 that Mazepin began to show his potential, however, scoring four wins on his way to finishing second to Anthoine Hubert in GP3.

Making the step up to F2, as is the case with many rookies in the category, the Russian dropped down the order and ended the year 18th but with two pole positions again hinting he could be a threat when aligned with the correct team.

In 2020, Mazepin become a more consistent front runner and, despite not scoring a pole position, took two race wins - both of which were in feature races.

Mazepin races with a predominantly red helmet that features his race number and his personal 'NM' logo. The design is one he has carried throughout his junior career.
