Ferrari talent the "first pick" for Haas in 2022 FP1 sessions
F1 will introduce mandatory running of young drivers in 2022
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has confirmed the Ferrari Driver Academy [FDA] will be his first stop when looking at rookie drivers for FP1 sessions next year.
Formula 1 managing director motorsports Ross Brawn confirmed in September that teams will be required to run 'rookies' in a number of first practice sessions from 2022.
Whilst this allows teams with young driver programmes such as Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari to give opportunities to its emerging talent, for teams such as Haas without this facility, alternative options must be sought.
“At the moment, if that should be written into the regulations, we obviously have to run rookies and I would think it would be Ferrari drivers," said Steiner.
“I haven’t spoken to Ferrari [about] who they have got next year and if they have got somebody I have no idea, but I would say that would be the first pick."
Currently, Haas runs FDA product Mick Schumacher in one of its two race seats.
Options for the sessions include Callum Ilott, Marcus Armstrong, Robert Shwartzman and Arthur Leclerc.
Should the FDA not be forthcoming with a driver, Steiner remains confident the team will not find itself short of takers for an F1 outing.
“If they have nobody, for sure there are people out there that want to drive the car in an FP1," Steiner explained.
