Grosjean undergoes surgery following Bahrain crash

Grosjean made a miraculous escape to survive a 53G crash in Bahrain

Romain Grosjean has undergone surgery on his left hand to repair ligament damage caused by his horrific crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Grosjean crashed on lap one of the race in October in an incident that tore in half his Haas VF-20 that also erupted in flames. The Frenchman struck a barrier at 137mph with a recorded impact of 53G.

Grosjean had hoped to compete in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a race which took place just two weeks after his accident, only for his injuries to rule him out and end his Formula 1 career prematurely.

On Tuesday, Grosjean revealed on social media he would be undergoing surgery to repair the damage to his hand.

Two hours before the operation he wrote: "On my left hand, the thumb ligament has been damage in the crash and we need to clean the wounds from the burn.

"Right hand also getting some treatment after some early 2020 injury. Should be a new man tomorrow."

With regard to the latter, Grosjean revealed after his accident he broke his hand in a fall at home before the season started.
