Kvyat explains how "anger" towards Grosjean became concern after horror smash
AlphaTauri driver Daniil Kvyat revealed how his anger turned to worry in the immediate aftermath of Romain Grosjean's horrifying crash on lap one of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Grosjean miraculously escaped serious injury after his Haas split in two and erupted into flames, an incident caused by a minor collision with Kvyat.
The Russian explained how he was at first annoyed with how the Haas had swerved across the circuit violently to initiate the contact before the fiery image led to his emotions instantaneously changing.
"It was a scary moment," he said. "At first, I was angry that he came across like he did. I thought, 'What is he doing?'
"But then my mind changed immediately when I saw the fire in my mirrors. I was just hoping he was okay immediately. I didn't like what I saw in my mirrors. I am glad he is okay, honestly. It just reminds you that what we do is dangerous."
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel questioned why the barrier seemingly failed and allowed Grosjean to pierce and stick within the structure of the railings but praised the safety of the survival cells of modern Formula 1 cars themselves.
"I haven't looked at the images a lot because I didn't really want to," he explained.
"The main thing is he got out, I don't know how to be honest. The guard rail is not supposed to fail like that. I mean it is good that the cars are safer than they used to be in the past but the guard rail shouldn't fail and the car shouldn't catch fire.
"There are precautions that it doesn't catch fire so I don't know what happened. It is difficult to say at this stage but the main thing is he got out."
