No excuses from Camilleri with Ferrari "in a hole"
Ferrari sit a lowly sixth in the constructors' championship
Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri has acknowledged the Formula 1 team "are in a hole" with no excuses for its slump.
The Scuderia had scored three consecutive victories and five successive poles last season before technical directives were issued by the FIA - following disputes about Ferrari's power units - that left the team struggling for pace towards the latter stages of the year.
While the outcome of the investigation was settled confidentially, the team's woes have continued this campaign, with Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel languishing in the midfield and struggling to score points.
Camilleri, though, has offered no excuses for Ferrari's issues as he said: "We are in a hole now and we know we are in a hole.
"It is a confluence of factors but anything I say will come across as excuses and we are not into excuses so what matters is to focus on the issues we have and to work hard with determination to get back to what we consider to be our rightful place."
Camilleri was in attendance at Mugello to celebrate Ferrari's 1,000th F1 race, and at least saw the team collect a double-points finish with Leclerc eighth and Vettel 10th.
With the regulations remaining almost stagnant heading into next season, Camilleri remains hopeful for some signs of improvement even with the same car, but expects the main opportunities to arise with the introduction of the new regulations in 2022.
"Realistically, it is going to be tough," he added. "In Formula 1, we are always fighting time both on the track and in development and there is no magic bullet.
"We will take time. I'm hoping with a bit more flexibility in the regs next year we can at least step it up from where we are. Mercedes, hats off to them.
"They have done an incredible job and we will see in 2022 with the new regs whether it creates a reset."
