Hülkenberg in the frame for 2021 Alfa Romeo ride
Nico Hülkenberg has revealed he has had talks with Alfa Romeo over a potential 2021 drive after returning to the sport as a substitute for Sergio Perez at the past two grands prix.
Hülkenberg competed both the British and 70th Anniversary grands prix for Racing Point after Sergio Perez tested positive for Covid 19.
A problem with his car prevented Hülkenberg from starting the British Grand Prix but, on his second weekend, the German qualified third and was consistently faster than team-mate Lance Stroll.
Had his car not developed a vibration that required him to pit in the closing stages, it is likely Hülkenberg would have finished ahead of Stroll.
This turn of pace was noticed up and down the pit lane and, talking on the F1 Nation podcast, Hülkenberg explained he has been talking to Alfa Romeo team boss Fred Vasseur about a 2021 drive.
The German said: “Yes, yes is the short answer.
"I mean doing a deal, there’s several terms that play into it, and that's always the package, I guess.
“I’m very keen to go racing again in Formula 1. I still love it here, it’s my passion. I’m not desperate but I’d certainly love to come back and be racing again. I’ve been talking to Fred quite frequently in the last few months."
Hülkenberg previously raced for the outfit, then named Sauber, in 2013.
Assessing his performance across the most recetn weekend, Hülkenberg added: "Actually, that lap didn't feel so good in Q3, but anyway, it was good enough.
"The race, it was good obviously, it's just hard when you don't know the car and you don't know anything. It's just coming new at you in the race.
"I guess I did okay. It's just a shame in that third stint with the blister otherwise it could have been better. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with my work."
