Alonso: Renault academy drivers "are the future"
Fernando Alonso sees it as his "mission" to use his motorsport experience to assist the Renault Sport Academy drivers progress into Formula 1.
Renault team principal Cyril Abiteboul has made it clear the signing of Alonso is not a snub of his potential future stars, despite Guan Yu Zhou and Christian Lundgaard among the favourites to take the F2 title this season.
Alonso appreciates he has so much to offer given his experience as he said: “Obviously, I am aware of the Renault Sport Academy and the importance of it for the group. I think the young, talented guys are the future.
“I will try to help as much as I can with my experience in different categories as well, different driving styles, and whatever it brings, the 2022 rules in terms of driving style, I can hopefully help them.
“I am aware of my mission, not only inside the car but also outside of the car, what I have to help and bring to Renault."
The length of Alonso's Renault contract is unknown, but even if he fails to land a third title with the French manufacturer, the Spaniard hopes he can assist in laying the foundations for a successful team.
He added: “I will try to do my best, obviously on track, and I will try to help the team to be a world champion team. If it’s with me driving, that is fantastic, if that is with a future, younger driver, I will feel proud anyway.”
