Williams don't deserve help of budget cap - Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve has dismissed Formula 1's impending budget cap as "pure socialism" and says his former employers Williams are not worthy of the potential benefits it could bring them.

F1 teams will have "performance-related costs" limited to $175million from 2021 and beyond as Liberty Media looks to level the playing field and make racing closer on-track.

A raft of new technical regulations will also be introduced in an attempt to curb Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull's advantage over the rest of the field.

Williams' hopes of returning to the top of F1 look bleak. The 12-time constructors' champions finished bottom of the standings last year and fill the same spot in 2019, with a solitary point scored through 19 of 21 races.

And 1997 world champion Villeneuve, Williams' last title-winner, says the team does not deserve to be given hope by a change of rules.

Villeneuve told Le Journal de Montreal: "What's the idea with helping the small teams who don't deserve it?

"Does an organization like Williams have the right to be as fast as Mercedes or Ferrari? The answer is obviously no.

"Frankly, the way they have been working for a few years now, they're not even in the same category.

"To me, it's pure socialism. F1 deserves better than that.

"Only the top three teams will spend the $175 million. Williams put about $16 million in its pocket last year while finishing last. So the management and the shareholders are happy.

"Even if the cap was $50 million, Williams would spend 20 and stay at the bottom. So it's a joke. Nobody wins."
