Wolff: It doesn't feel like Mercedes are leading the championship
Toto Wolff has confessed that it still doesn’t feel like Mercedes are leading the constructors’ championship, even though they currently hold a 150-point lead over Ferrari.
The Silver Arrows have once again been the dominant force this campaign and have won 10 out of the opening 12 races through Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, with Max Verstappen winning the remaining two.
However, with Red Bull looking very strong in the races before the break, and with the upcoming races in Belgium and Italy potentially playing to the strengths of Ferrari, Wolff says Mercedes can’t take anything for granted.
"We're leading in both championships, but it doesn't feel that way," Wolff said ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
"In the last few years, we saw teams perform very strongly after summer shutdown, so we now we need to keep pushing.
"In that respect, we're approaching the start to the second half of 2019 more like the start to a completely new season.
"Once again, we need to make sure that we leave no room for error and keep raising the bar."
Wolff went on to reveal that a significant portion of the Mercedes workers back home have tirelessly worked through the summer break to make sure the team hits the ground running in the second half of the season.
"Other team members were carrying the baton over the past weeks," he added.
"Our team members in Brixworth worked straight through the F1 summer break to improve the performance and reliability of our power unit.
"In Brackley, we used the relatively quiet days to do some work on our factory.
"It's great to come back from the summer break knowing that part of the team was still pushing flat out and we are grateful to our colleagues who kept the ball rolling while we were out of office."
